Seminar (3 February 2018)
Building Material: Innovation and Influence on Architecture
Building material is any material, whether natural or man-made, used for construction purpose. It constitutes a considerable share of the material science, as well as the manufacturing industry in the wider scope. Material science involves discovery and design of new materials and incorporates multidisciplinary fields ranging from natural science to nanotechnology. With the rapid development in technology, material science has incorporated issues such as energy, life cycle, ecological footprint, information etc. In the same line, building material also involves now issues of economic, social and environmental concern beside the functional dimension.
Architecture offers a wide opportunity of application field for the material science with some specific interest; such as environmental and functional sustainability, comfort, aesthetics, regionalism, culture etc. With the change of living concepts and demand of multifarious building function, the field of building material also faces and will continue to face many challenges. On this background, this seminar will illustrate some examples of new technology and innovation as well as regionalism in architectural application of building material and is expected to facilitate a sharing platform of knowledge, experience and idea.
Design Charrette (4 February 2018)
Charrette is a French word that means chariot or cart. The idea for design charrettes has been originated in the 1800s in Paris, as the design documents from the students in architecture schools were collected in a charrette for evaluation, and the students continued to madly sketch together until the deadline. Today, design charrette is practiced in architecture schools as way to inspire ideas and innovation, include more people in the design process, explore and expose goals and objective of the particular design problem.
Like the last two years, the Department of Architecture, MIST is again launching a design charrette on the occasion of MIST Architecture Festival 2018, to celebrate the completion of 3 years of its establishment. This charrette is open for all the students in any architecture school in Bangladesh. The participants must be in Level 1 or Level 2 in their study programs.
