Nuclear Science and Engineering and its uses will play an important role to face the challenges of 21st century and to promote Bangladesh as per the vision of the government. Now a days, Bangladesh is marching gradually to incorporate the uses of nuclear technology in producing power, medicine, industrial and agricultural products etc. From Bangladesh perspective, professionals to take care of the nuclear infrastructure, equipment and material like nuclear power plant, nuclear fuel and other radioactive materials especially for power generation and healthcare diagnostics and to integrate the latest technology effectively for quality citizen services were a long-felt necessity. Therefore, start-up of this nuclear education is a very time demanding effort. A major goal of the Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) Department is to advance the core disciplines needed to achieve new, beneficial applications of nuclear science and technology. Our students will study modern nuclear techniques which will find applications in medical imaging, radiation-based therapy, contraband detection and nuclear security and safeguards. In near future, our nuclear engineers/nuclear scientists will be employed in nuclear power plants, other power industries, nuclear medicine centers, research facilities, government regulatory agencies in our country as well as around the globe.
NSE Department was raised in 2014 and the first academic session started on 5th February 2015 at Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). There are 40 undergraduate students in the maiden batch. NSE Dept. has also started MSc, MEngg and PhD programme from October 2015 session.
Undergraduate level: B.Sc in NSE
Masters Programme: M.Sc and M Engg in NSE
Doctoral Programme: Ph.D in NSE
Short Courses: Based on the requirement from the students, Govt establishments, industry etc. dynamic short courses of one to four week are conducted by the department of NSE
The Dept of NSE draws its strength from the experienced pool of highly professional faculties. The dept is headed by the Head of the department and consists of 3 Professors, 1 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professors and 6 Lecturers and 6 guest faculties of different ranks which translates to 1: 9 teacher to student ratio. The faculties are drawn in from diverse nationalities, diverse prior professional exposure (Military, Industry, Academia), diverse educational qualification and background and thus provide large areas of expertise for students to benefit. Based on requirements, domain specialists are drawn from other educational institutes like BUET and Dhaka University. Being the only Nuclear Industry Nuclear Power Company Bangladesh Limited (Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Bangladesh) also contributes to our teaching strength by providing their professionals’ experts to the academic activity of the department. Besides, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission contributes to a greater extent by providing their professional experts to different specialized subjects every now and then.
CATS-MIST (NSE) started its journey in the year of 2018 with a view to provide material testing. The associated laboratories are scanning electron microscopy (SEM) lab, Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WDXRF) lab, High Purity Germanium detector (HPGe) lab. Under the direct involvement and supervision of highly qualified professionals, CATS-MIST (NSE) has successfully conducted a number of testing works. CATS-MIST (NSE) is running with best possible integrity and quality.
Currently we are providing the following services:
Scanning Electron Microscopy (Imaging and Elemental Analysis)
Elemental Analysis by XRF, WDXRF
Permeability Test
Corrosion Test in Salinated Environment
More
The dept of NSE provides a conducive learning environment for the students in the form of state-of-the-art classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. While the classrooms provide an opportunity to learn the technical aspect of the subject, the laboratories provide an opportunity for the students to have an “hands on" experience on technology and thus innovate. The air-conditioned classrooms with broadband Wi-Fi, projection system, document readers are an ideal place for collaborative learning. In addition to the existing three laboratories - Nuclear Chemistry and Safeguards Lab, Modeling and Simulation Lab, and Radiation Detection and Medical Application Lab - other five laboratories are under construction with latest equipment.
To augment the learning facilities in the Department, a Department library has also been established. This library is in addition to the MIST Central library and holds over 150 books and close to 100 thesis of ex-students. The books in the library are procured based on the recommendations of the faculty members and students and are mainly available to assist the students in their research work.
The library is well subscribed by the students and is a hub of research work and project activities undertaken by the department. The library provides the students undertaking different courses and ideal platform to exchange ideas and collaborate.
Our students excel in various contests and have certainly made their mark on both national and international arena with over 10 research publications in world renowned journals. Recently an article published by a MSc Engineering student from NSE Dept in “Radiation Physics and Chemistry (Elsevier)” journal has been accepted by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for EXFOR data Library maintained by the International Network of Nuclear Reaction Data Centers (NRDC) coordinated by the IAEA Nuclear Data Section, Vienna, Austria on 9 January 2020. The EXFOR library contains an extensive compilation of experimental nuclear reaction data.
Department of NSE strives for its students to excel not only in academics but also research work. With over 30 conference papers and 10 journal publication since 2015, Our students and faculty are actively present in the Nuclear Energy research arena. With industrial training at over 05 nuclear facilities, UG students also get professional exposure during their stay at MIST. The department also hosts relevant conferences and seminars with the most recent being the seminar on “Present Status of Nuclear Energy Development in Bangladesh”, where the Hon’ble Minister of Science and Technology was the chief guest with many renowned speakers from the govt. industry and abroad.
Dept of NSE is not only focused on academic development but also improvement of communication and leadership skills of its students'. Dept of NSE always encourages and gives support to the students to take part in different extra-curricular activities through which they can nurture there social, leadership and managerial skills. Our students promptly take part in cultural competitions, debate competitions, leadership development programs and so on, and have been certainly proving their capabilities and excellence in these activities. NSE Dept was consecutive runner up in the Inter Departmental Debate Competition for the years 2018 and 2019. Our students have also proved themselves brilliant and unbeatable in the field of sports like cricket, football and volleyball. Our students know well how to have a little fun despite of being involved in academic circumstance. They arrange intra departmental cultural fest and gaming contest yearly.
