Short Courses: Based on the requirement from the students, Govt. establishments, industries, etc. dynamic short courses of one to four weeks are conducted by the department of ME. Some of the recent short courses include Programmable Logic Controller, Modern Features of Automotive Vehicle and Vehicle Inspection Procedure, Hydraulic System Design, Air Conditioning Duct design (HVAC), etc.
The Dept. of ME draws its strength from the experienced pool of highly professional faculties. The department is led by the Head of the department and consists of 4 Military Faculties, 2 Professors, 7 Assistant Professors, 20 Lecturers, and 1 Research Assistant. The faculties are drawn in from diverse prior professional exposure (Military, Industry, and Academia), and diverse educational qualifications and backgrounds. They thus provide large areas of expertise for students to benefit from. Based on requirements, domain specialists are drawn from other educational institutes like BUET and the industry.
The Dept. of ME provides for a conducive learning environment for the students in the form of state of the art classrooms and well equipped laboratories. While the classrooms provide an opportunity to learn the technical aspect of the subject, the laboratories provide an opportunity for the students to have an “hands on" experience on technology and thus innovate. The air-conditioned classrooms with broadband Wi-Fi, projection system, document readers are an ideal place for collaborative learning. The existing 13 laboratories are Thermodynamics Lab, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Unit, Measurement and Quality Control Lab, Heat Transfer Lab, Machine Tools Lab, Material Production Process, Drawing Shop (CAD) Lab, Heat Engine Lab, Applied Mechanics Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Automobile Lab.
To augment the learning facilities in the Department, a Department library has also been established. This library is in addition to the MIST Central library and holds over 700 books. The books in the library are procured based on the recommendations of the faculty members and students and are mainly available to assist the students in their research work. The library is well subscribed by the students and is a hub of research work and project activities undertaken by the department. The library provides the students undertaking different courses and ideal platform to exchange ideas and collaborate.

Department of Mechanical Engineering arranges contests throughout the year to cope with the monotony of the curriculum. Presently, MIST Campus Hour is held once a month where students participate in different cultural events and contests. Contests are arranged by the department as well as by clubs like MOTO MIST Automotive Club, under Mechanical Engineering Department. Recently, MOTOMIST held “Trash to Toy” Contest where students made toy vehicles from instruments available around them. It showcased the ability to utilize materials which many would call trash. ME Dept. also arranges many workshops, seminars, short courses where contests also take place. Recent Solidworks competition saw many students with skilled design ability blossom. There is also “Mecha Olympiad” held yearly on “Mecha Day” to recap and enjoy what the students have learned at the end of the academic year. Contests are followed by prize giving ceremony and cultural events.
