The Department of Biomedical Engineering, MIST was founded in 2014 and started the academic program of the pioneer batch of Undergraduate Biomedical Engineers in the country. The B.Sc Program commenced on 1st February 2015 with 41 students. The M.Sc program commenced on 4th November 2015 with 5 students. Currently, there are a total of 162 students in the B.Sc Program and a total of 42 students in the M.Sc Program. Biomedical Engineering (BME) is an interdisciplinary field that combines the design and problem-solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to advance health care treatment. Deeply interdisciplinary, biomedical engineering applies modern approaches from the experimental life sciences in conjunction with theoretical and computational methods from engineering, mathematics, and computer science to the solution of biomedical problems of fundamental importance, such as human health. This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine, combining the design and problem-solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to advance health care treatment, including diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy. The current focus of the BME Department includes the development of biocompatible implants and prostheses, various diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices ranging from clinical equipment, common biomedical imaging equipment, cell & tissue engineering, regenerative tissue growth, pharmaceutical drugs, and therapeutics. Undergraduate: Bsc in Biomedical Engineering (4 Tracks)
Graduate: Msc/MEngg in Biomedical Engineering
Short Courses: Depending on the requirements of the students, the department organizes short courses designed to complement core course curriculum of the students. Recent short courses include "Introducing students to programming using MATLAB", and "SOLIDWORKS designing for Biomedical Engineers".
Workshops: The department frequently holds workshops designed to enhanced practical skills of students and introduce them to the technical aspects of many sub disciplines of Biomedical Engineering. Students are subject to hands-on approach where active participation is encouraged. Recent workshops include Workshop on Medical Imaging.
Currently, the Department of Biomedical Engineering boasts a group of highly professional faculty members who has extensive experience and expertise in a wide range of various Biomedical Engineering sub-disciplines. Additionally, guest faculties from different renowned institutions and a wide range of expertise take specialized courses as well as to conduct thesis supervision. The faculties come from diverse prior professional exposure from institutions including BUET, Dhaka University, etc.
The Biomedical Engineering (BME) programs here at MIST offer a world-class curriculum that is innovative and integrated so that students can experience a holistic educational experience and ability to thrive in the following ways: we offer a well-rounded biomedical engineering training with exposure to a dynamic curriculum and industrial attachment, to give the competitive edge to be leaders in the future to solve real-world, multi-disciplinary issues with following Laboratories:
We empower the students to succeed in today's modern biomedical engineering industries with unique opportunities that will provide them the entrepreneurship skills in the interface between engineering and the business world to make commercial decisions that will fast-track their careers.
MIST Central Library houses over 100 books for BME Department as well as thesis books from previous students. Books are procured based on faculty and student recommendations. The library is well subscribed by both faculty members and students. Not only does it serve as an efficient source for academic studies, but also for conducting research work as well.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering has had a productive academic year in 2020-21, despite the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic achieving some awards internationally by participating in the “4th International Clinical Engineering & Health Technology Management Congress (IV ICEHTMC) 2021” at Lake Buena Vista, Florida, USA, as well as awarded with Graduate Fellowship 2021 in Bangladesh Reference Institute for Chemical Measurements (BRiCM) along with the MoU Signing Ceremony between JHRML and MIST, organized by this BME Department.
View MoreThe Department of BME provides a broad range of opportunities for both students and faculty to conduct research and carry out projects. The department offers a wide variety of topics to research on, including biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation, drug development & delivery, cell and tissue engineering and biomedical sensors. Highly motivated faculty and students have managed to publish their research work in Journals, Conferences and in Book Chapters. Departmental research is supervised by dedicated faculty members having extensive research experience in different fields of Biomedical Engineering. Ongoing research work focuses on issues prevalent in the country.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering regularly hosts seminars and conferences to broaden scopes for exposure to ongoing biomedical engineering research. The department has a consistent record of arranging 1-2 seminars per year and has hosted a total of 6 Seminars since its beginning in 2015. This includes an international conference (BICoBs-2016) as well as an international observation of World Birth Defects Day (WBDD-2019). Moreover, the Department has earned MIST a platinum membership in the annual observation of WBDD on 03 March. The department also has organized the first ever Job Fair for Biomedical Engineers in the country in 2019.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering underscores the importance of extra-curricular activity by regularly encouraging students to participate in a wide variety of activities, competitions, volunteer work both home and abroad. Our students have a good record of participation in different extra-curricular activities, including cultural competitions, Debate and Public Speaking competitions, Inter-departmental football competition and International competitions. Students of BME have achieved a number of positions in all categories. Recently, two BME students participated in the AEO-2020 held in Indonesia achieving finalist and top 20 positions in different segments.
BME Department has produced a total of 111 graduates from the first three batches of the undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Programme from those 14 students who pursue higher study in the USA, 5 students pursuing their higher studies in France, Finland, Germany, Malaysia, and Australia respectively as well as 22 students started pursuing higher study in the country. Following graduation, our students have set off towards their path to be the pioneers of Biomedical Engineers in Bangladesh. Almost 33 graduated students have found employment in academic and engineer positions in different institutions and companies, including MIST, JMI Group, CMED Health Ltd., JBF Digital Trading Co., Ltd, and as researchers in the R&D sector of institutions and in universities. Alumni List
Formed by the students of the Biomedical Engineering department in 2017, MIST Einthoven Club is a place for students interested in using engineering techniques to design solutions for healthcare applications. With the motto of "Acquire, Act & Achieve", the club focuses on activities designed to initiate the development of skill through interactive class sessions, as well as projects. Aside from regular activities, the club organizes competitions and seminars for students with shared interests to showcase their knowledge in the field of biomedical engineering. View More.
