Associate Prof. Mohammad Sazzad Hossain coordinated the Open Forum and represented IAB in organizing the Open Heritage Week 2019

An Open Forum on ‘Conservation of Built Heritage in Old Dhaka: Challenges and Opportunities’ was held on Saturday, 7 December 2019 at the IAB Centre to create a common platform for multidisciplinary professionals (e.g Architects, Planners, Archaeologists, Historians, conservation experts etc.), policymakers, academics, local stakeholders, and representatives of local and international organizations to find a way forward to promote and conserve the built heritage of Old Dhaka through open discussion, dialogue and exchange of opinion. The Open Forum was a part of the ‘Open Heritage Week 2019’ which is an event by the European National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), Alliance Française de Dhaka, British Council Bangladesh, Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, EU Delegation, Embassy of Spain, Dhaka South City Corporation, Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts and Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) to promote the cultural heritage of Bangladesh.Assoc. Prof. Mohammad Sazzad Hossain, in his closing speech summarized the overall discussion.

Assistant Professor Sadia Subrina, Department of Architecture wins the Individual Freedom Essay Writing Competition organized by Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) in December 2019

FNF is the foundation for liberal politics in the Federal Republic of Germany to promote the principle of freedom both in Germany and abroad. The competition is organized for one of its supporting country, Bangladesh with the topic ‘What does it mean to have individual freedom as a Bangladeshi?’ Assistant Professor Sadia Subrina perceive freedom in gender equity which she elaborated in the essay titled ‘Loiter, move, or fly: choice is yours.’ For her to have individual freedom as a Bangladeshi is the freedom to commute freely without being victim of harassment or freedom to travel on the way back to home from work at night without being accompanied by any male guardian or freedom to loiter in a public space or freedom for discrimination in the workplace.

Lecturer Sabbir Ahmed has co-authored the paper titled “The Grand Canal: Envisioning Water Urbanism as the Basis of Metropolitan Resilience of Dhaka City.” With Shuvo Datta in the 12th FARU International Research Conference held during 3-4 December 2019 at University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka

In the special issues of the Journal of World Heritage Studies, 2019 an article ‘Integrated Approach for Nature-Culture Linkage at Mahasthan Heritage Site’ by Mohammad Sazzad Hossain, Associate Professor, Department of Architecture, MISTwas published. The Journal is published by the University of Tsukuba, Japan.

ACCENTUATING RAIN-WINNERS

Lecturer Dristi Chakma and Lecturer Gourab Kundu from Department of Architecture had participated on Open-Idea Competition, 2019 titled “ACCENTUATING RAIN” organized by Archtwist and became 1st Prize Winner. The competition was about celebrating Rain. In this tropical region with prolonged monsoon, people have been romanticizing the rain since the beginning of time. Between men and this unique emotional phenomena, participants had to design a man-main intervention or an interface on an existing setting to create a new experience or to accentuate the usual one.

Design Competition 2019 in Seoul, South Korea

Lecturer Sadia Sharmin, Department of Architecture had participated in an international design and installation competition “Shelter for Soul”.  Her design project ‘A House of Ordinary Stories’ won silver prize among 180 submissions from 39 countries of the world. The competition was organized by the Korean Institute of Architects (KIA) and BaMI (Builders as mission international). Lecturer Sharmin attended Korean Architecture Festival 2019 in Seoul, where her installed project was exhibited.

Lecturer Manjima Shabnam presented a paper titled “Green Networking: An approach to apply landscape ecology model in reviving the ecological networks of Dhaka Metropolitan city”as first author at Architects regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) 20 Forum held at 3-4 November 2019 in Dhaka

CEPT University in Ahmedabad, India holds a yearly international essay prize competition. The theme for 2019 was ‘Dwelling in Asian Cities’. Lecturer Sabbir Ahmed has come out fifth (5th) in CEPT Essay Prize 2019 and his essay titled “The Song of Green and Blue” was selected for publication by CEPT University Press. His essay focused on the green and water resources of Dhaka city and their implication towards better urban living. There were more than one hundred submissions in the competition from all over the world.

Lecturer Sabbir Ahmed submitted 6 reviews in the event of 53rd International Conference of the Architectural Science Association(ANZAScA) held on November 28-30, 2019 at Roorkee, India. His paper titled“Enlivening Miles: A Study of the Potentialities of an Abandoned Railway Corridor in Narayanganj to Serve the Growing City as a Green Corridor” was also published in the conference

Lecturer Sabbir Ahmed’s paper titled “APPLICATION OF SPACE SYNTAX ANALYSIS IN LALBAGH: Exploring The Links Between Spatial Analysis And Drug Crime Pattern In Selected Streets Of Lalbagh, Dhaka” was published in 2019 issue of MIST Journal of Science and Technology, the annual technical journal of MIST

Assistant Professor Mustafizur Rahaman, Department of Architecture participated at “KLAF 2019 International Ideas Competition: First Colony on Mars Competition,” organized by Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) and KLAF 2019 Competition Committee, Malaysia, August, 2019.His design proposal “PLASTICO” has been selected as one of the Shortlisted entry among 125 International submissions and published at Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival KLAF 2019 Logbook.

Launching ceremony of the book “BashirulHaq Architect,” co-authored by Sadia Subrina,Department of Architecture,MIST

Ar. Sadia Subrina, Assistant Professor of the department of Architecture, co-authored the monograph of eminent Bangladeshi architect BashirulHaq. The launching ceremony of the book “BashirulHaq Architect” was organized on 18 July 2019 at architect’s one of the most celebrated creations, Chhayanaut. Ar. Haq is highly appreciated for his place responsive architectural style andsome of his notable works are EAST WEST University, Kalindi Apartment Complex, ASA Head Office Building, and Sunbeams School. While architecture curriculum in Bangladesh mostly focuses on westernarchitecture and there is a severe lacking ofreference books onarchitecture of Bangladesh, this book hope to serve a resourceful reference for architecture education as well as practices of Bangladeshi architecture.

Assoc Prof. Md Sazzad Hossain of Department of Architecture, MIST delivered lectures at Charles University, Prague as a Visiting Professor

Mohammad Sazzad Hossain, Associate professor, Department of Architecture, MIST was invited by the Charles University, Prague to give lectures at Postgraduate level. From 8 to 26 April 2019, Prof. Hossain was associated with the International Master’s Program “TEMA+ European Territories: Heritage and Development” at Charles University and his key responsibilities were to give lectures, conduct seminars and carry out research activities with focus on History of Architecture, Built Heritage and Conservation. It may be mentioned that Charles University is one of the leading Universities in Europe. In 2012 Mr. Hossain also taught at the University of Padua which is another reputed University in Italy.

It may be mentioned that Assoc Prof. Hossain is already recognized at National and International level for his expertise in the field of Heritage and Conservation. He is the current President , South Asian Chapter, Erasmus Mundus Association; General Secretary of Bangladesh National Committee, International Council on Monuments and Sites(ICOMOS) and Secretary ,Heritage and Culture, Institute of Architects
Bangladesh(IAB).

A Socio-economic and Anthropological Survey on the Potter Communities in the surrounding villages of Paharpur was published by UNESCO Dhaka office in conjunction with Ministry of cultural affairs, Bangladesh,World heritage centre, ICOMOS-Bangladesh and Republic of Korea in 2019. UNESCO Dhaka office acknowledged the role of Ar. Mohammad Sazzad Hossain for his contribution.

Ar. Md. Sazzad Hossain, Associate professor, Dept. of Architecture, MIST, is elected Secretary, Heritage and Culture, 23rd Executive Council of Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB). The oath taking ceremony took place at IAB Center on 03 March 2019.

Associate professor Md. Sazzad Hossain attended workshop from 21 September to 1 October 2018 atTsukuba University, Japan on “Nature-Culture Linkages in Heritage Conservation in Asia and the Pacific with special focus on Disaster and resilience” with full fellowship.

Associate professor Md. Sazzad Hossain is elected as President of South Asian chapter, Erasmus mundus Association

Mr. Md. Sazzad Hossain, Associate professor, Dept. of Architecture, MIST, is elected as President of Southasian chapter ,Erasmusmundus Association (EMA) for 2018 -19. Earlier, He was also the elected information coordinator of EMA-South Asian chapter and EMA- Country Ambassador (Bangladesh). EMA is the association of scholars who received scholarship/fellowship from European Union supported Erasmusmundus program for higher study, scholarly activities etc.
